PIMA Statement on Grenfell Fire Tragedy

We are deeply saddened by the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London. At this juncture, it is premature for PIMA to comment or speculate about the cause or nature of the fire. And we urge others to use similar caution when reviewing statements made by interests other than British officials who are investigating the fire.

Building practices can vary between the North American markets and other regions of the world. Here in the United States and Canada, jurisdictions have adopted rigorous building and fire safety code requirements. These requirements subject construction materials, including foam plastic insulation, to fire test standards that determine whether a material or assembly provides a suitable fire safety margin for specific building types and applications. Polyiso insulation has a long history of performance and safety in widely-used roof and wall applications.

As a collective industry, we can best mitigate the risks of building fires here in the United States and Canada through the continued adoption, education, and enforcement of building and fire safety codes.  PIMA will continue its efforts to educate stakeholders on the code requirements for foam plastic insulation and promote the adoption of the most recent code and standard versions by authorities having jurisdiction.

Additionally, PIMA will respond to misleading statements regarding the performance of Polyiso insulation and, where appropriate, provide information to assist with the distribution of fair and accurate information on our members’ products.
